A greeting for every moment

German greetings change with the time of day and the situation. Today, learn them as complete phrases—no conjugation table needed.

MORNING

Guten Morgen!

Good morning

DAYTIME

Guten Tag!

Hello / Good day

EVENING

Guten Abend!

Good evening

A friendly hello. A polite goodbye.

Use Hallo! with a friend. Guten Tag! is a useful polite choice when entering a shop or office. When leaving, use Tschüss! informally or Auf Wiedersehen! politely.

Notice the capitals. German nouns begin with a capital letter: Morgen, Tag, Abend. Learn “Guten Morgen” as one phrase. We’ll explain the endings later.

Say each greeting twice. Then imagine arriving at a café in the morning and leaving a formal appointment.

You arrive at an office at 9 a.m. What fits best?
